MathRiders Interviews with High School Students
Q: Why did you decide to get involved with the MathRiders program?
A: Sharon, age 16: I was just talking with my friend at school about how difficult our Maths class is, and she told me about MathRiders. She said that the MathRiders lessons really helped her, so I thought I would try it too. I'm so glad I did.
Q: How does MathRiders compare to studying Maths at school?
A: Abby, age 16: There is HUGE difference! At school, one day we learn one thing in Maths, and the next day we're on to something new, whether I understand it or not. At the MathRiders centre, my teacher stays on the same subject with me until she knows I understand it completely.
A: Adam, age 15: At school, my classes are so big they hardly remember my name, and only the best students get attention in Maths class. At MathRiders, I get one-on-one attention. The classes are small, so I can study what I need like Algebra, at the same time the others are learning their own subjects and we all get plenty of help.
A: Elisa, age 15: I'm shy in class and really embarrassed to ask questions in front of everyone or sound stupid. MathRiders makes me feel more confident, so I do ask questions. The atmosphere is much more relaxed and supportive than at school. The teacher is also a lot more patient and repeats everything until I get it. At school, my teacher never has time to repeat anything.
Q: Has MathRiders helped you to improve your Maths skills?
A: Sam, age 15: My teacher at school noticed a big difference in me, I'm doing better on tests, and paying attention more in class. It makes me feel a lot better about myself as a student like I really can be one of the 'good kids' in class.
A: Elisa, age 15: I'm more independent now, I can study on my own much better in class and with homework. MathRiders taught me not to get frustrated or panicked when I need to solve a Maths problem, and how to find solutions on my own.
A: Sharon, age 16: I'm not afraid of Maths now. It used to be my worst subject, but not anymore. Learning at MathRiders helped me to think in a logical way, and overcome a big mental block I had about Maths.
Q: What do you think of the MathRiders learning atmosphere?
A: Maya, age 16: The atmosphere is serious but fun. We actually get a lot of work done, but I really enjoy doing it.
A: Elisa, age 15: It's so relaxed compared to school, and there is always someone there to help me.
A: Eric, age 15: It's not just about learning from a book, but about being with friends and talking about our ideas and about how we feel as well.
A: Rafi, age 17: "MathRiders gives me a break to do homework and spend more time with the teacher on subjects that are hard for me.
Q: Does MathRiders help you to be more confident?
A: Adam, age 15: I learned new ways to understand Maths and about what I need to do for myself to succeed, and that doesn't just go for Maths but for all my subjects at school.
A: Rafi, age 17: Now I know what it means to be motivated. It really helps me not to lose my concentration when I study at home, because I know what my goal is.
Q: Would you recommend MathRiders to other young people?
A: Rachel, age 16: Yes. Some of my friends have a hard time concentrating on their homework on their own, so I tell them about what MathRiders did to improve my Maths grades.
A: Lilly, age 14: My friends all see how much more confident I am at school and that suddenly I like to take part and speak up during Maths class. They begged me to tell them how I changed, and two of them have already joined the MathRiders centre in our town.
